What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the hips, and down each leg. Sciatic pain typically feels like a sharp, burning, or shooting pain that radiates from the lower back into the leg.

Two common causes of sciatica are disc bulges (herniated discs) and piriformis syndrome—but they originate in very different places.

Sciatica from a Disc Bulge vs. Piriformis Syndrome: What’s the Difference?

If you're experiencing pain radiating down your leg, you're not alone—and you may be wondering whether you're dealing with sciatica from a disc bulge or piriformis syndrome. At Logan Chiropractic Center in Warren, Michigan, we help patients every day understand the root cause of their pain and develop personalized care plans. Understanding the difference between these two conditions is key to finding lasting relief.

Sciatica from a Disc Bulge

A disc bulge, or herniated disc, occurs when the soft cushion between your vertebrae pushes outward and puts pressure on a nearby nerve root.

Key Characteristics:

  • Originates in the lumbar spine (lower back)
  • May be accompanied by lower back pain
  • Pain worsens with sitting, coughing, or bending forward
  • Often includes numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot

How Chiropractic Helps: At Logan Chiropractic Center, we use safe and effective techniques—like spinal adjustments and lumbar traction (aka; spinal decompression)—to reduce pressure on the nerve and improve spinal alignment.

Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle in the buttocks spasms or becomes tight, compressing the sciatic nerve.

Key Characteristics:

  • Originates in the buttocks, not the spine
  • Pain is often felt in the hip, buttocks, and back of the leg
  • Not typically associated with low back pain
  • Aggravated by sitting, walking uphill, or climbing stairs

How Chiropractic Helps: At Logan Chiropractic Center, we treat piriformis syndrome with targeted soft tissue therapy, stretching techniques along with specific adjustments of the hips/low back to relieve, nerve pressure, muscle tension and restore mobility.
