Dr. Bill Logan at the Logan Chiropractic Center in Warren, MI, has over 30 years of experience in chiropractic care, including sciatica treatment to relieve pain and improve overall mobility.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy is the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, causing nerve pain. The sciatic nerve is the longest in the human body and originates from the nerve roots at the bottom of the lower back and stretches into your leg as far as the knee.
What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?
Sciatica is usually accompanied by sharp, shooting pain in one leg that radiates downwards from the lumbar region (lower back). In severe cases, it may also be accompanied by feelings of numbness or tingling. Finally, the pain may be worse during movement, especially going up the stairs, and there is reduced mobility due to the pain.
At the Logan Chiropractic Center in Warren, MI, Dr. Logan regularly sees patients suffering from sciatica. Before starting treatment, Dr. Logan will perform a physical examination and take your medical history, and may also refer you for imaging tests to confirm a diagnosis or rule out other medical conditions with similar symptoms.
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica is the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve that causes painful symptoms. The root cause of sciatica is often a bulging or herniated disc, spinal misalignment, or stenosis.
However, this irritation or compression can also be caused by:
- Poor posture
- Obesity
- Spinal injury
- Osteoarthritis
- Tumor/abscess
Chiropractic Care for Pain Relief and Improved Mobility
Chiropractic care is an alternative approach to healthcare. At a fundamental level, it’s focused on improving or restoring spinal alignment to provide pain relief and improve mobility and function for a better overall quality of life.
Sciatica impedes mobility and causes pain. To combat this, relieve pain, and improve mobility, Dr. Logan will have a dual approach, focusing on the spine and relieving your symptoms. This may include the following treatments:
- Chiropractic adjustments to realign the spine.
- Decompression therapy to gently stretch the spine and reposition the vertebrae and discs
- Therapeutic exercise to strengthen your muscles and improve your overall posture.
- Laser therapy for pain relief and to stimulate healing.
Nerve pain can be extremely difficult to treat. For this reason, we recommend a whole-person approach. This allows us to address the underlying cause together with the symptoms, helping you work towards long-term pain relief and mobility.
